With Kefalonia being renowned as a beach lover's parade it hard to know which one to choose next. Below is a guide to the ones we believe cannot be missed during your stay and reward the effort of getting there.
Makris Gialos Beach, Lassi
Situated a short walk down from the main road in Lassi. It is probably the most popular beach along this coastline as it has gently shelving sands, crystal clear waters an excellent selection of water sports and one of the most modern beach bars on the island. It is extremely busy during the high season and is the place where the young and beautiful of Kefalonia love to hang out. Costa Costa is the main place to be seen on the beach as it offers an excellent standard of beach furniture, long cooling drinks and a wide choice of snacks and relaxing music during the day. By night it is a great chill out place to head to. As the waters are very shallow this is a perfect place for families with small children. (Blue Flag.)
Platys Gialos Beach, Lassi
This beach is very similar to Makris Gialos in that it is a lovely stretch of golden sand with crystal clear shallow waters. It is approached down the long winding pathway just before the White Rocks Hotel. It does tend to be a lot quieter than its neighbouring beach and is often frequented by families from Argostoli. There is a nice snack bar at one of the beach with showers and changing rooms. There is an inviting small stretch of sand backed by rocks that juts out to sea which is known as Tourkopodaro which forms part of the White Rocks Hotel and is for use by residents only.
Kalamia Beach, Lassi
This is the most northerly of the Lassi beaches and is found at the start of the headland along the Lassi Fanari road that leads through to Argostoli. It is a narrow stretch of grey sand with a band of fine shingle at the waters edge and is set in a small picturesque bay with white cliffs to the south. There is a small path leading to the beach from the road. Facilities include sun beds and umbrellas and a small bar serving drinks. This is a wonderful place to escape the crowds often found on the other beaches in Lassi.
Gradakia Beach, Lassi
Gradakia Beach is a rocky inlet which is found at the most northerly point of Lassi. It has crystal clear waters which are ideal for snorkeling. There is a small stretch of grey, course sand but most people who visit this beach prefer to sit and sunbath on the rocks even though there are amble sun beds and umbrellas available.
Palio Stafida, Lassi
This is the beach that is attached to the Mediterannee Hotel and access is through the hotel's grounds. It is a long stretch of lovely golden sand edged with aquamarine sea. The views from the beach are simply stunning. There are plenty of sun beds and umbrellas to use as well as room at the southern point of the beach if you prefer to lay out your beach towel. There is a self-service restaurant on the beach serving a mixture of snacks and salads as well as a great choice of Kefalonian cuisine. The beach also has showers and changing rooms. The waters shelve very gently making this an ideal beach for families. This beach does become very popular during high season and it is recommended to head there early in the morning to be able to have a sun bed for the day. As you head along the beach in a southernly direction follow the pathway over the rocks and this will lead you the smaller beach known as Antonios Beach. Again there are sun beds and umbrellas to use and a snack bar serving a variety of cool drinks and tasty snacks. It enjoys the same wonderful view as the Pali Stafida Beach and has the same inviting, shelving waters.
Minies / Ammes
These two beaches are both very close to the airport. They offer shallow clear waters, soft golden sands and are both backed by a clay rocky back drop. They both give a great viewing point for plane spotting as you can see the end of the runway from the sea. Both beaches are much more natural than other beaches in the area so are perfect to be away from the crowds.
One of the longest and most pleasant beaches in Kefalonia. This is a silver stretch of fine shingle backed by turquoise blue clear waters. The sea is really quite deep in parts so a little care needs to be taken but there is a life guard on duty in the central part of the beach. There is a good selection of tavernas and bars to choose from. The beach stretches as far as the resort of Trapezaki. There are plenty of sun beds and umbrellas as well as sections of the beach that are a little less organised. There is also a small selection of water sports to hire.
A good sandy beach that stretches for 7 kilometres. It is both long and deep and rarely gets overcrowded. There is a great choice of water sports and excursions operating from the sea front. The beach is backed by an excellent selection of bars and restaurants. As the waters shelve gently it is perfect for families with children. (Blue Flag.)
This beach is fairly narrow and is more shingle than sand but considering its size it gets very lively during the season. It has a fantastic selection of water sports to try. As the waters shelve very gently, it is another beach that is ideal for families. Poros also has a good selection of tavernas and cafes that are close at hand from the beach. (Blue Flag.)
This beach became famous during the filming of Captain Correllis Mandolin. Located 3 km south of the village of Sami and accessed by a road that takes you through breathtaking scenery this is a sweep of white pebbles lapped by violet sea in a picturesque setting. It is a beautiful beach with clear waters but has minimal facilities just a few sun beds, umbrellas and a small kantina selling cool drinks.
One of the most photographed beaches in Greece. From up above it looks like a fine white sand beach however once on the beach you will find it is smooth, little, white pebbles. The bay is nestled in to white cliffs making the whole effect very dramatic. It is a real sun trap and can get very hot plus the current can become strong later in the afternoon. There are limited facilities which include sun beds and umbrellas and a small beach shack offering drinks.
Located just south of the town of Lixouri this small cove has a beach of golden sand. It is an attractive setting with breath taking views. It has all the essential facilities for a lazy day sunbathing.
Probably the best beach on the Pali peninsula. Xi Beach is unique in the fact that its sands are a brilliant red colour and it is backed by clay cliffs that if scraped off and mixed with water it makes a wonderful mud mask. The beach has very shallow crystal clear waters and a great selection of beach furniture, water sports and snack bars to choose from. It is well worth the journey to spend a day here as it is one of the most magical beaches in the Ionian Islands. (Blue Flag.)
This beach is what dreams are made of. It has a totally tropical feel and is completely unspoilt and natural. The views are amazing and even though the selection of tavernas and bars is limited the quality is excellent. Sections of the beach are well organised with sun beds and umbrellas however you can quite easily find your own quiet spot away from anyone else.
